Reading Can Help You Sleep Better

Many of us are guilty of not reading enough despite the many benefits of doing so. Reading before bed is a great habit and can keep our brains healthy. Not only this, reading before bed can actually lead to better sleep. If you struggle to switch off at night it may be time to turn off the television and turn to a book instead. Here is how reading can help you sleep better.

Ditching the Screens

Reading a book means ditching your mobile, tablet or any other electronic device before bed. Too much screen time can affect sleep massively and can totally mess with your usual sleeping pattern. This is because the glare of a screen can confuse your brain and lead it to believe that it is still day-time. This then means your brain doesn’t produce melatonin, which is needed for you to feel sleepy and fall asleep at night. Due to this many people now have to take melatonin supplements to sleep at night. If you want to get rid of the screens at bedtime, choose a book to help relax you and get you ready for a good sleep. You should also encourage your partner and children to do the same. Most parents read to their children before bed, so why do we then go to bed and scroll through our phones? Breaking this habit should improve your sleep dramatically. 

Reducing Stress

Reading is a distraction tool for the mind and can help alleviate any stress you may feel from the day you have had. Reading has been found to reduce stress more than many other methods of relaxation such as music or drinking tea. Stress is one of the main reasons people struggle to fall asleep at night and so distracting your mind with a book to fall into a peaceful sleep may be just the answer you have been searching for. Making a Routine

A bedtime routine can really help in feeling tired before bed. If you constantly do the same things before you go to sleep, your brain will begin to associate these tasks with sleeping and will therefore begin to relax and get ready for sleep. This may mean getting a hot shower, getting into your pajamas, making a cup of hot cocoa and picking up your favorite book. Reading is one of the best ways to help fall asleep and is an excellent way to end your bedtime routine. If you do shift work, falling asleep can be even more difficult still and so reading can help your brain to realize it’s time to sleep, no matter what time of day or night it is. 

Reading provides many benefits and can help you to get a better sleep at night. If you want an alternative to scrolling through your phone, choosing a book from your local library or book store is a good start in forming a new bedtime routine.
